The Shrinking Market Is Changing the Face of Hip-Hop COURTESY THE NY TIMES

By KELEFA SANNEH
Published: December 30, 2007
UNTIL a few weeks ago it seemed like one of the few happy stories to emerge from an otherwise difficult year in hip-hop. UGK, the Port Arthur, Tex., duo that influenced a generation of Southern rappers, returned after a five-year hiatus. They came back bearing a sublime single, “Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You).” And they came back bearing a great double album, “Underground Kingz” (Jive/Zomba), which made its debut atop Billboard’s album chart.

50 Cent, challenged Kanye West to a sales battle and lost: Mr. West’s “Graduation” has outsold 50 Cent’s “Curtis” by about half a million copies.

Prodigy, went independent this year with “Return of the Mac” after his duo, Mobb Deep, released an album on 50 Cent’s G Unit label that flopped.
Then, on Dec. 4, the news arrived: Pimp C — the duo’s flamboyant half, a slick drawler and an even slicker producer — had been found dead in his hotel room. His bereaved musical partner, Bun B, gave a handful of eloquent interviews, trying to explain what he had lost, what fans had lost.

“I appreciate the concern,” he told Vibe. “But I wouldn’t ask anyone to stop their life, because Pimp would’ve wanted us all to keep grinding.”

If you’re looking for a two-word motto for hip-hop in 2007, you could do worse than that: “Keep grinding.” This was the year when the gleaming hip-hop machine — the one that minted a long string of big-name stars, from Snoop Dogg to OutKast — finally broke down, leaving rappers no alternative but to work harder, and for fewer rewards. Newcomers arrived with big singles and bigger hopes, only to fall off the charts after selling a few hundred thousand copies, if that. Hip-pop hybrids dominated the radio, but rappers themselves seemed like underground figures, for the first time in nearly two decades.

Sales are down all over, but hip-hop has been hit particularly hard. Rap sales fell 21 percent from 2005 to 2006, and that trend seems to be continuing. It’s the inevitable aftermath, perhaps, of the genre’s vertiginous rise in the 1990s, during which a series of breakout stars — Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, the Notorious B.I.G. — figured out that they could sell millions without shaving off their rough edges. By 1997 the ubiquity of Puff Daddy helped cement hip-hop’s new image: the rapper as tycoon. Like all pop-music trends, like all economic booms, this one couldn’t last.

This was a bad year for hip-hop sales, but it wasn’t necessarily a bad year for the genre. The scrappy New York independent Koch flourished, releasing a couple of great CDs by major-label refugees: “Return of the Mac,” by Prodigy from Mobb Deep, and “Walkin’ Bank Roll,” by Project Pat. (Koch also released “We the Best,” a sanctioned mixtape by DJ Khaled that produced a couple of hip-hop hits, and “The Brick: Bodega Chronicles,” the well-received debut album from Joell Ortiz.)

And then there is Turf Talk, a loudmouthed upstart from Vallejo, Calif., who made arguably the year’s most exciting hip-hop album, “West Coast Vaccine (The Cure).” It came out through Sick Wid’ It Records, which is run by his cousin, the rapper E-40. (The album was released through a distribution deal with Navarre, which sold its music distribution business to Koch in May.) And despite Turf Talk’s flamboyant rhymes, the album has pretty much remained a secret. Without a national radio hit or even a proper music video, Turf Talk has promoted the CD mainly through West Coast regional shows, from San Diego to Tacoma, Wash.

Reached by telephone at his home in Concord, Calif., Turf Talk tried to put the best spin on a mixed-up year. “The independent game is starting to shine again,” he said. But when pressed, he said he would love to cross over to the mainstream, speaking in the third person: “Turf Talk wants to be known all across the world.”

A few years ago that might have seemed like a reasonable goal, and an attainable one. During the boom the industry was flooded with scowling optimists: small-time hustlers with dreams of big-time success. And some dreams came true. In 1998 Juvenile went from a New Orleans secret to a pop radio staple, selling five million copies of “400 Degreez”; two years later, Nelly came from nowhere (actually St. Louis) to sell six million copies of “Country Grammar.” Overall CD sales peaked in 2000, and by then even second-tier major-label rappers were routinely earning gold plaques for shipping half a million CDs.

Because hip-hop is so intensely self-aware, and self-reflexive, it came to be known as big-money music, a genre obsessed with its own success. If we are now entering an age of diminished commercial expectations, that will inevitably change how hip-hop sounds too.

How bad are the numbers? Well, no rapper was more diminished by 2007 than 50 Cent, who challenged Kanye West to a sales battle and lost. His solid but not thrilling recent album, “Curtis” (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope), has sold about 1.2 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan; considering that he’s supposed to be the genre’s biggest star, that’s a disaster. (His 2005 album, “The Massacre,” sold more than five million.) In fact “Curtis” has sold about the same as T. I.’s “T. I. vs. T. I. P.” (Atlantic), the underwhelming and underperforming follow-up to his great 2006 album, “King,” which sold about 1.6 million.

This year veterans like Jay-Z and Wu-Tang Clan also returned, pleasing old fans but not, for the most part, making new ones. And Lil Wayne released another slew of great mixtapes — available for free download, not for sale. Meanwhile Mr. West’s “Graduation” (Roc-A-Fella/Island Def Jam), which stands at 1.8 million sold and counting, is the only hip-hop album of the year that really seems like a hit, although he loves to portray himself as outside the hip-hop mainstream. Only one problem: After a year when the hitmaker Fabolous and the bohemian Common sold about equally, as did the BET favorite Yung Joc and the indie-rap alumnus Talib Kweli, it’s not clear that there’s still a hip-hop mainstream to be outside.

And eager newcomers discovered that the definition of success has changed. Rich Boy, Shop Boyz, Plies, Hurricane Chris and Soulja Boy Tell’em all released major-label debuts, buoyed by big, lovable hits: “Throw Some D’s,” “Party Like a Rockstar,” “Shawty,” “A Bay Bay” and “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” But of those only Soulja Boy has managed to sell half a million CDs. Hurricane Chris’s disappointing CD, “51/50 Ratchet” (Polo Grounds/J Records), has sold only about 80,000 copies. To a major label that number is almost indistinguishable from zero. (Despite the hit the No. 1 chart debut and the half-decade of anticipation, UGK’s triumphant double album hasn’t reached the half-million mark either.)

Hip-hop has always had a complicated relationship with full-length albums. They’re both too long (for impatient hit lovers) and too short (for ephemera- obsessed mixtape listeners). And even though the South has been hip-hop’s most fertile region since the 1990s, the industry, based in New York and Los Angeles, harbors a lingering anti-Southern bias. Southern rappers are often viewed as one-hit wonders, and that can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. By the time Rich Boy, from Mobile, Ala., tried to drum up interest in his excellent fourth single, “Let’s Get This Paper,” it seemed everybody had already moved on.

At least independent-label rappers have no one to blame. Turf Talk knew from the start that he would have to fight for his album, which he released in June. “I had a lot of hopes for ‘West Coast Vaccine,’ that’s why I’m still pushing it now,” he said, adding that he was finalizing plans for a video. The song he chose was “Popo’s,” a sleek and infectious collaboration with E-40, who adds a memorable touch: a thunderous “Oooh!” In his mesmerizing verses, Turf Talk raps about selling drugs and avoiding the police. His breathless rhymes — “I’m tryna stack every dollar,” he pants — evoke not a kingpin’s confidence but a survivor’s tenacity.

It’s easy to romanticize Turf Talk’s grass-roots approach: his do-it-yourself video shoot, his evident pride in how much he has accomplished on his own, his commitment to the family business. But for him the promise of exposure and the long shot at stardom are too tempting to reject.

“I love the independent money,” he said. “I’m living good, I drive nice cars. But right now, if you asked me, I’d say, ‘Turf Talk wants to go major.’ Because you can always come back to independent.”

That’s what Prodigy discovered. Last year his duo, Mobb Deep, flopped with “Blood Money,” a misconceived CD on 50 Cent’s label, G Unit, an Interscope imprint. This year he went independent for “Return of the Mac,” a hallucinogenic, willfully obscure solo album that evokes the grimy old New York, and the grimy old Prodigy too. (It sold about 130,000 copies.) He has a new album scheduled for next year, though he pleaded guilty in October to gun possession and was sentenced to three and a half years. His new single, “ABC’s,” begins with a halfway defensive boast: “It don’t matter who poppin’ for the moment/P is forever.” If you’re not making hits, why not claim to be making history?

Like Prodigy, Project Pat is a major-label refugee. He emerged from Memphis in the late ’90s and swiftly took advantage of the hip-hop boom. “Chickenhead,” his memorable but medium-sized hit (it peaked at No. 24 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart), helped his 2001 major-label album, “Mista Don’t Play: Everythangs Workin,” sell nearly 1.1 million copies. (Five years ago, in other words, Project Pat sold about as well as 50 Cent sells today.)

After a prison sentence and an underperforming major-label comeback, Project Pat made his Koch debut with “Walkin’ Bank Roll.” The boast in the title track is a defiant (and typically absurd) response to his diminished commercial success: “I’m a walkin’ bank roll/You can rubber-band me,” he keeps shouting, and his glee is infectious. It’s a weird, funny little album; though it has sold only about 40,000 copies, it feels triumphant.

Is it possible to hear a shrug over the phone? Project Pat, when asked about his newfound independence, seemed profoundly unimpressed. “It’s the same old, same old,” he shouted, over the roar of a Mortal Kombat game, though he conceded, “People say they liked it better.” He said he was planning his next album and gearing up for more live dates, which are crucial for independent acts. “Alaska — yessirrr, Anchorage,” he said, sounding a bit like the eccentric rapper from the CDs. “They asked for me per-son-al-ly.”

Under-the-radar releases, weird tour schedules, modest sales figures: none of this is new. The success of Southern hip-hop in the last decade was built on a foundation of independent and independent-minded rappers, many of whom worked with the scrappy regional distributor Southwest Wholesale, which is now closed, like many of the little shops it used to serve. In an earlier era these regional scenes were farm teams for the industry, grooming the top players and then sending them up to the big leagues. But what if there are no big leagues anymore? What if there’s no major label willing or able to help Turf Talk get his platinum plaque? Would his next album sound as brash? Will his musical descendants be as motivated? The mainstream hip-hop industry relies on a thriving underground, but isn’t the reverse also true?

Eventually, a (new?) group of executives will find a business model that doesn’t depend on shiny plastic discs, or digital tracks bundled together to approximate them. But for now the major league is starting to look a lot like the minor one. And in ways good and bad and utterly unpredictable, rappers may have to reconsider their place in the universe, and their audience. Some will redouble their commitment to nonsense, like Project Pat. Some will wallow in their misery, like Prodigy. Some will merely revel in their own loudmouthiness, like Turf Talk, hoping someone will pay attention. But if sales keep falling, more and more rappers will have to face the fact that they aren’t addressing a crowd, just a sliver of one.

On Oct. 14, less than two months before Pimp C’s death, there was another death in the Houston hip-hop family. His name was Big Moe, and he died of a heart attack. He was a much more local figure than Pimp C: a crooner turned rapper and an associate of DJ Screw, who popularized the art of remixing records by slowing them down. (DJ Screw died in 2000.) Big Moe’s best tracks are sublime and disorienting. His was a huge, wobbly sing- rapping voice, often paired with slowed-down drums and lyrics extolling the pleasures of cough syrup.

Big Moe eventually got himself a deal, but his odd and entertaining 2002 major- label debut, “Purple World” (Priority/Capitol), quickly disappeared, and soon he was back to independent releases. It’s no slight to his legacy to say that when news of his death arrived in October, even most hip-hop fans didn’t know who he was. That’s all right. Music that seems lost — there’s a head-spinning selection on “Big Moe Classics Volume One” (Wreckshop) — will be found, over and over again. And after this dispiriting year, it’s not hard to admire Big Moe’s little career. He made secrets, not hits, but so what? He kept grinding.

R&B Singer Brandy Won't Be Charged In Deadly Crash Courtesy str8hiphop.com

The Los Angeles city attorney's office said Friday it will not charge Brandy in a deadly December 2006 freeway crash. Spokesman Nick Velasquez said there is "insufficient evidence" for a jury to find the 28-year-old actress-singer guilty of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter beyond a reasonable doubt. The decision runs counter to a recommendation from the California Highway Patrol that Brandy, whose real name is Brandy Norwood, be charged in the Dec. 30, 2006, crash. Brandy was driving on a Los Angeles freeway when traffic slowed and her Land Rover smashed into the back of a Honda. That car was involved in several other collisions. The driver, 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj, died in the accident.

**YUNG TEXXUS STILL THE HOTTEST TOPIC IN THE STREETS!!!!*

> Words by: Hallway Jay
>
In 2005, Texx gained national exposure in "The Source Magazine" and went on
to drop a slew of underground smashes such as "Drank in My Cup", "I Gits
the Money" ft. Big Hood Boss, Tum Tum (DSR/Universal) and "Still in Love with
my Ex (Remix)" with Kelly Rowland. His work with D.J. Scream on "Believe the
Hype" placed him at the forefront of underground Southern Hip-Hop. Since
2005 you may have seen Yung Texxu$ pop up in magazines, Hip-Hop DVD's, or
websites, but for now the rest of his tale has yet to be written. At many
times Texx finds himself walking the thin line between the streets and
music. Enveloped by the underworld he can't leave and trapped by his
obsession to ascend to the heights of Hip-Hop royalty, Texx is currently
working on his debut album "The Underground Prince", scheduled for release
in 2007. Only time will tell how his saga will end.

illRoots: Okay, weve been friends for a little time now. Where are you in
your career, and what steps can you say helped you get this far?*

Yung Texxus: Well, My career is just starting. I'm just beginning to make
my mark on the game. I've come a long way, But I still have quite a way to
go. The major thing that has helped me in my career has been my grind, and my
relationships with others. The Dj's (Dj Scream, Dj Ampz, Dj Blurray,Dj Clue,
Dj Storm, Dj Explicit, Dj Know Skillz, Dj Amaze, Dj Tlay)..and so many more,
if i forgot any one please forgive me, I got you on the next one*lol.
Also, my fellow artists my whole State City Music Family, My Cuzzin Spark Dawg
and Green City, Panama Whuddup!! And Last but not least a strong management
team and Support system, Shot out to Jay Classik and the Whole Hustle Fam
Movement, and All the Hustle Squad DJ's. Also, My Patna Reg Hudson and Fire
Eye Ent. Who's heading up My Marketing and Promo Team for State City music!

*illRoots: I know Scarface signed Green City and your album "Brand New
Money" is coming out on his label. How has that process been working with
a legend?*

Yung Texxus: It was a dream come true. You know, growing up I listened to
Scarface. He's a legend in the game. Next thing I know, we dropping tracks
together, It was unbelievable. I'll always have love for Uncle Face, he gave
us a really big Look. The Source Magazine, XXL Magazine. In the review our
album recieved a XL. We also recieved press in Ozone Magazine, We we're
nominated for an Ozone Award (Patiently Waiting: Texas) We didn't win, but
being nominated was an honor. Shot out to my big Homie Tum Tum, Who took
home the award!

*illRoots: I've known all about State City please; elaborate on that a little?*

Yung Texxus: State City Music is my record label, and My Group "S.C.G.'z"
which stands for" State City Gangsta, & the Stocking Cap Gang" We formed it
in 2002..we have several different members..(Myself, SLuggz The Don,
N.I.S.H., J.Lex, J Dot R, K WaL, and Money who happens to be Co- Ceo) We are a very
diverse group of individuals, We have members from New York City, Delaware,
and Texas. Look out for our Mix-Album "Enemy of The State" Dropping First Quarter of 08

TOP TEN POD CAST SONGS: DISQUALIFIED (“MIDWEST SWAG” – “THINKING LIKE A BILLIONAIRE” DUE TO CONFLICT OF INTEREST)

1. EMOTIONS - M2

http://www.myspace.com/mtwo317

When thinking of what the Number 1 song would be for this pod cast there were many things to take into account. Was the beat hot? Were the 16s killing’em?? But as I began to think more into what the meaning of music is, I developed a sense of what I wanted to represent STOP BEEFIN START EATIN radio with as the #1 song we picked for the year of 2007. The year 2008 needs change and as we move closer to new challenges, etc. we should never forget the main objective. To make a change or difference in this world through our music. So with that said, I present you the #1 song for the 2007 pod cast radio station and that is “EMOTIONS” by talented and dynamic artist M2. It’s not even his beat but the song says everything…change. One part of the hook says “ I can’t change the world but I try, Ima’ try, Ima’ try” I HAVE NEVER FAST-FORWARDED THIS SONG………the opposite of love is not hate it’s indifference…Make a Difference....make a change.....LISTEN TO THE SONG. GHOST GAME CUT FROM THE CLOTH PROMO

BIO:

born into the game therefore i am the game, it cant be said any better than
that. born into this game of life, the streets, and music. with a family
history
in each of the catagories he was basically chosen to be what he is a
boss..they say the sun shines on a child when they are born but what if the
only view the child sees is the shadow of the county jail...born basically
within feet of kane county jail and livin the earliest years of his life on
the
the borderline of two separate lockem up counties the infamous cook county
and the gangbanging kane county. "i believe my life has been a series of
tests" strong words from a man that has seen deep loss in his life, loss of
friends family and for a long period hope. you might know tha story, single
parent home, project living streetlife calling and a youngster answers. "i
feel my music is whats needed nowadays and into the future...i can teach you
about the game the ins outs ups and downs and in reality why you shouldnt be
in it...this here is more than a fad this is school you cant wait to get
to" 3 brothers from his mother and he is the last one on this earth so god
has a
plan for him "my life was pure pain for a longtime and this music is my
release" and with that began a legacy to which none have begun to
understand. Its wasn't easy but without knowing it a young Lynn Woodson
continued on where his mother and father who where in a 70's band Son Of
Soul left off. teaming up with other talent from his nieghborhood started
rapping any and everywhere possible but by it being a group most people
didnt even know that those detailed lyrics came from him.. the group which
was called DCG or "Dark City Gangstaz" began to dwindle until the 6 original
members ended up being 2. After local talent shows and opening up for the
likes of "Do or Die" and "Twista" family problems and life problems led to a
road block. Moving to Indianapolis in 2001 after the tragic loss of his
younger brother, GhostGame came together his family who were also into music
and started FoevaGrindin Ent. which spawned the super group "Click Tyte"
after recently tearing up the local scene and well as being the first non
southern artist's to ever appear on "Eastcoast ryders" which has an almost
cult like following and opening for "Camron" and "Dip Set" at the Circle
City Classic festival, he strikes out on his own and while still a Click
Tyte member wants to test the waters and express himself.....people be
prepared for if possible for the greatness about to be bestowed on you

STR8HIPHOP presents JAYZ TO LEAVE DEF JAM!

Universal Music Group said on Monday that rap artist and hip-hop mogul Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter is stepping down as president of its Def Jam Records unit, effective by the end of the year. Carter, 38, has been president of the rap label since 2005, and has signed acts including R&B singers Rihanna and Ne-Yo. Universal said Carter, a top-selling rapper who performs as Jay-Z, will continue recording for its Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam label. But the company did not give a reason for his decision to quit the executive suite. "Now it's time for me to take on new challenges," he said in a statement. "I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy," he added. Carter will focus on his expanding franchise of 40/40 Nightclubs over the next year and other businesses, according to a source familiar with his plans.

"When I went into the studio to produce this record, I wanted to create

history," St. James explained. "No one in Indiana has found a way

Eric Gordan were bringing to the State. Now with all these people paying

attention to whats going on up here, it was my responsibility to the

STOP BEEFIN FOUNDER ST. JAMES INTERVIEWS RICK ROSS ON HHNLIVE>COM

HHNLive.com sits down with Rick Ross to discuss his new album "Trilla", his west coast inspirations, the death of Miami's Sean Taylor, his charitable work, growing up in Carol City and much more:

Rick Ross on Ice Cube: "He was the God of rap to me."

St. James: How you feeling?

Rick Ross: I’m trying to get over this cold, working hard on the album so it’s all hood.

St. James: You’ve come up relatively quick in the MIA in terms of the music game. Miami has a nice movement going with you, Trick, Pitbull, Khaled, etc. What have you done to put yourself in the position to be considered “The Boss” at home and nationwide?

RR: You already know man, paying dues and staying down. Paying all those same dues, you know I was on the road with Trick for years. Poe Boy Entertainment, May Bach….you know we’ve been on the scene forever. We came out with the “How Can I Be Down” summit, to the C’s, to Poe Boy Entertainment and you know we here.

St. James: You did the huge song “I’m So Hood” with Khaled. Talk to me about the whole Miami movement and how you’ve all benefited from the love amongst each other and the blessings of those who came before you.

RR: What it is was like, we were on the sidelines for so long we watched the other coasts do their thing. I was enjoying the West Coast run. To me that’s when rap music was at its best. That’s when I think the fans really loved it. You know fans used to cry over artists, stuff like that. In that time it was Tupac, it was Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, it was Rage and Dre, it was BIG, it was Diddy, it was The Lox, Cam’, Ma$e. It was the best ever for music. That’s how I tell my dudes, how we must present it so that we get that type of love. We have to keep it real amongst each other because that’s how we’ll eat FOREVER. That’s the difference in eating for 3 years and in eating FOREVER.

St. James: No beefs right?

RR: Nah, no beefs. Everybody is on the same page.

St. James: You have your second studio album Trilla dropping in February. What have you been cookin’ up in the lab?

RR: Awwww man. Big records. Big records for the streets. One of my singles is “MayBach Music” with Jay. It’s incredible.

St. James: You and Jay-Z?

RR: Yeah that one has me and Jay on it and J.U.S.T.U.S. League produced it.

St. James: Who produced the "Street Money" record that's out there?

RR: My man J-Rob produced it. He’s one of Poe Boy Entertainment’s in house producers. So it’s all hood.

St. James: Is there any significance to the album title?

RR: Yeah. You know down south we refer to Trill. My uncle Bun-B put out the Trill album, I just put the Michael Jackson spin on it and we got Trilla.

St. James: With record sales being low and the fabled “sophomore jinx” opposing you, how do you feel about your body of work and how the public will receive it?

RR: Nah man I’m confident. And with the success of records like “We Takin’ Over” and “I’m So Hood”, the streets know what it is. I’m most definitely confident that Trilla will exceed expectations.

St. James: You were discovered by Slip N Slide correct? How did that flip into a major deal with Jay over at Def Jam? (give the artists some insight)

RR: Yeah, you already know. My first deal I had was with Suave House. But shortly after I signed, they went under with Universal. Draper kept it all the way gangster and we just parlayed that into a Slip-n-Slide deal. I stayed down here and we chopped it up. Then once the single “Hustlin” hit…you know Slip n Slide was running all of their artists through Atlantic. I felt like I really didn’t want to f*ck with them. I wanted to make the biggest move we could make to make this as big as possible. I felt that meant going with Jay-Z and Def Jam. We put the Port of Miami together, debuted at #1 Billboard, two singles later, we platinum. I love the structure, the teamwork, unity, and the love. At the end of the day it’s getting the job done for The Boss you know what I’m saying?

St. James: What’s your relationship like with the major labels?? A lot of artists are saying they are satisfied as an indie.

RR: ...when you independent, you independent because you have to be independent. You would love to be on a major but you have to make the best of whatever. There are positive points, a lot of positive points to being independent. But we are all bosses and we all want to do it as big as we can. That’s when the major dollars come into play. You got to do it big. Straight up.

St. James: You’ve got the group Triple C’s (Gunplay Murdock, Ashley Ross, P-Nut, GT, Jae-Hoffa) coming soon. What’s the rundown on a compilation?

RR: The album Triple C’s: Black Flag Resurrection, that’s coming on my Maybach Music Group imprint. That’s coming summer 2008. Gunplay is doing shows everywhere now. Everybody know what it is and everything is coming together.

St. James: Talk to me about growing up in Carol City, Miami and how that gave Rick Ross the drive and determination to be where you are today?

RR: I’m not going to lie, being young, you know I graduated high school in ’95, so I first heard Luke SkyWalkker “Hey we want some pu**y!” in like the 4th grade. I’m young as f*ck and I love the music but also I’m watching their growth. I wasn’t just interested in the music, but when I used to walk to the store and buy an album, I used to read the address of the office buildings…get the phone numbers. I was interested in that. I’m like he’s making music and getting money? That’s what I NEED to be doing! And I’m thinking this in like 4th and 5th grade real talk. I bought everything faithfully. Everything they released I was buying. And that turned over into when N.W.A. came out and I left Luke and them’s sh*t alone. That’s when I was introduced to Ice Cube. He was the God of rap to me.

St. James: Real talk!! He was my favorite back in the day real talk!

RR: Ice Cube, I didn’t care about whoever. When N.W.A. went against Ice Cube, I was like “F*ck N.W.A., Eazy-E (R.I.P.), f*ck’em”. Because I felt that connection with Cube. He’s probably the one artist who has influenced my style the most. That straightforward hard sh*t. Because to me like “Amerikkka’s Most Wanted” was like the hardest album ever!

SJ: Hey, Kill At Will was that beast too though. Kill At Will was pretty hard.

RR: Kill At Will was super hard! It was just that Amerikkka’s Most Wanted...It did it for me.

SJ: (singing) Once upon time in the projects….

RR: When everybody said he was over with, N.W.A. dissing him 100 Miles and Runnin’, and he stood up like a muthaf*ckin boss!!! (starts singing a verse from Amerikkka’s Most Wanted)

SJ: LOL! That’s that sh*t!!

RR: I was like that’s what it is. I wanted to get money like Luke and rep Miami like Luke. But I said I want my style to be like Cube!

St. James: How did the disparity between Carol City and what is advertised as Miami (i.e. South Beach) affect you and those around you?

RR: Well Carol City was like the Compton of Miami you know what I’m saying? That’s why I most definitely felt that connection. They were like boy “Compton is the worst place in the world” and I was like sheeeeeeee-it...it can’t be worse than this! You know when we talk about the other side of the bridge, that’s what we are talking about. Liberty City, Overtown, Carol City. That's the sh*t you see when you watch “The First 48 Hours”. You ever watch that show?

St. James: Yeah Yeah.

RR: Those are the parts of Miami that you see. Those types of things are happening. You know that’s where we grew up, that was our whole set. That’s why I felt that connection to the West Coast gangsta music. So that’s why the gangsta music comes from the Trick Daddy vibe, the Rick Ross, the d-boy talk. That’s what it is around here.

St. James: What’s the significance or symbolism behind your name Rick Ross?

RR: Everything that’s going on has something to do with it. But what is important was, when I first heard the name I was 18, and I didn’t hear it in a way where they were talking about the person. I was in a conversation where a lot names were mentioned and I kind of repeated it. Then I said “Boss” with the “Ross” and it just kind of stuck. I said it in a verse and some of my homeys just kept saying it, so it stuck since I was like 18. You know of course after the single came out the real Rick Ross and his background surfaced. Most definitely I salute him and that’s what it is.

St. James: You do a lot of charity in Miami, through Rick Ross Charities, Inc. What do you hope to show young inner city kids about succeeding out of an environment like that?

RR: Yeah what it is, we always had the worst image. I never had the best image my damn self. So when we are in the city you know, out and about, you know it’s not like we get money doing other things. We get money in the public so I definitely want to reach out and give back at the same time. So you know what it is. We just set up a little Hip Hop spot in Miami. It’s kind of a fake 40/40. The Hip Hop Grub Spot, it’s really for young kids and teenagers after school who want to get early schooling being a black, white, or Latin entrepreneur. Being in the music business. Being a DJ or Manager whatever. Mixtapes, video games and that type of stuff. Building record pools. But these are young teens though. It’s just being a structured school where kids can be a part of that.

St. James: Right to show kids there’s more to the business than being a rapper.

RR: Yeah yeah yeah! Most definitely. 9 out of 10 times you won’t be the rapper but you can still get money in this business. Instead of learning it when you are 25 we are showing them when they are 12 or 9th grade or whatever.

St. James: I’m from VA and I just want to say my heart goes out to Miami and the family of Sean Taylor. What is the city of Miami going through with this immense tragedy of a native son?

RR: Man that’s such an unfortunate event, and it goes to show you that tomorrow is never promised. You have to keep that pistol under that bed man. You have to take that charge. That’s what I’m kind of mad about, about the whole situation. You know he had to take a little heat for the past situation and he felt like he couldn’t have that in his possession. I mean someone come into my house? Sh*t I would’ve been fired 100 rounds through the walls and everything at you’re a**. You know what I mean? But you know it’s unfortunate, this dude laying here, his young child is there, his female is there and he’s trying to defend them you know? He lost his life behind that. It’s senseless violence, I’m pretty sure they are going to find out who the suspect is. I’m pretty sure they are going to catch him but you know…that man is dead and gone. He lost his life.

St. James: I know man….it’s just beyond words dude.

RR: You know he had the previous charges and whatever and he couldn’t have one. That’s just it though, you got to protect your life and your family. Anybody out here reading this...I’m sorry that’s just my stance on it. The whole thing too is the kids you know? Do it for the kids. The kid could’ve gotten hurt in the situation too you never know. It’s just a blessing things did not turn out worse.

St. James: She (Sean Taylor's 18 month old daughter) was reported as being present.

RR: That’s what I’m telling you. Dudes don’t usually leave witnesses you know. So God is good in that respect but we just wish his family the best you know? It’s really sad.

St. James: Tell the people something they don’t know about Rick Ross.

RR: Ya'll already know man. Ricky Ross man. I’m just keeping it regular you feel me? The streets, the hood, the movement. Any artists out there, any producers…get at your boy. Trilla 305.

Infared music would like to thank all of it's fans for continously
supporting the L.E.P and Bogus Boys movement throughout the years. It is
unfortunate that we must announce a recent loss to our family. As some of
you may know, Lil Larro was shot and killed last week in Chicago, the
details are yet to be identified, we will try to keep you all updated.
Count, Larro's half brother, the other half of L.E.P. would like everyone to
know that he is putting the whole Chi town on his back and continuing the
L.E.P. movement and he is asking that everyone Please call up your local
radio stations and support that song' Get it Like we Do' featuring Young
Dro. Larro will not be forgotten, he will always live on overlooking the
L.E.P. family from above. Infared Music would like to wish its hopes and
prayers with Larro's family and freinds on thier loss of an extrordinarily
talented individual. Larro was a leader and a good man, we shall always
carry his torch as we ride off into the sunset. RIP Lil Larro. If you knew
Larro and have anything worthy to say about him, or even if you want to wish
his family well, please leave a comment. Thanks again for all your support,
we will keep L.E.P alive!!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS RELEASE: LOW END PROFESSIONALS SIGNED TO SONY
BMG

Low End Professionals also known as L.E.P. is the newest act signed to
Infared Music/Sony BMG. Hailing from Chicago, L.E.P. has shown that gangbang
music doesn't always mean you promote violence. They do, however, maintain
consistency in communicating through their lyrics that they are from the
streets and have lived through the tough crime life which occurs in
Chicago's housing projects. L.E.P. exemplifies the fact that all regions of
America have had their chance to shine; now it's Chicago's turn to make
their mark in Hip Hop.

The Low End Professionals consist of two talented emcees; Count and Larro.
Larro is the street hustler with an intense and menacing swagger, while
Count is the muscle and acts as the stick up man behind the duo. The streets
consider them as the quintessence of what the hood represents in Chicago.

L.E.P. has been included in various publications, which is understandable
since they've been signed by a major music powerhouse. You can see them on
Straight Hood, State to the Lake and Hood to Hood DVD magazines. L.E.P. has
also had the opportunity to perform with acts like E-40, Young Drop and Rick
Ross- which lead them to their contract with Infared Music Label at the end
of 2005 with Sony BMG.

"L.E.P. got this deal because of the originality they possess as individual
artists as well as a group. The sound they have is very unique to their
region and musically tasteful", says Infared Music's Eric Jones. Anton
Marchond, L.E.P.'s A*R at Song BMG states that "they voiced the life and
struggle of Chicago's darker side, and when I saw their grind and dedication
to their music I had to sign them".

L.E.P.'s debut album is currently in the works and the release date is
slated to drop the first quarter in 2007. You can expect features from
industry heavy hitters like Rick Ross, Bun B, Young Dro, Twista and
Fabolous. The also have an all-star production roster handling the hit
making process like Kanye West, Nottz, tha Heatmakerz, Hi-tek and other
trailblazers. L.E.P. is set up for success and has shown that they deserve
to be here. They are sure to take the Windy City and the entire world by
storm!
